If you prefer a compact book with a briefer treatment of grammar and no diagramming, consider Writers’ Choices: Grammar for Effective Writing – Compact Edition. Originally published as Writers’ Choices: Grammar to Improve Style (Harcourt College Publishers, 2002), it includes most of the material on sentence rhetoric in the longer book, as well as most of the non-diagramming exercises. In both books, the central emphasis is on helping student writers become more conscious of choices available to them as they frame their ideas in sentences and paragraphs. Designed to fit into a composition course, it has also been used successfully in English education courses for training teachers. Here is what one professor wrote us about it:
Let me tell you, first off, that I absolutely love using your book. It is so helpful and informative, and the students love it. I’d love to see a copy of the larger textbook and perhaps use it when I teach grammatical analysis next time. . . You’re both kind of rock stars with our students.
